Choosing a nursing home

Making a decision to enter long term residential care only comes after exhausting all other alternatives. It’s possible that before making the decision some knowledge has been gained from short stays in nursing homes to give respite to family carers. However, many people end up entering long term care after acute illnesses requiring hospitalisation and therefore enter directly from the hospital.

There are a number of helpful guides available. The HSE themselves have provided a useful booklet entitled Nursing Home Checklist which sets out a three step plan for choosing a home along with a checklist of questions to consider.
